Where to find it

When a teacher calls in sick at 7am, someone in the office solves a constraint problem by hand, on paper, in fifteen minutes, while the first period is starting. They do it every single morning.

Al-Manal does that search instantly: given the timetable and who is absent, it produces the teachers who are genuinely free for that period, so the decision is a choice rather than a scramble.

Challenges

  • 'Free' is not the same as 'available'

    The snag

A teacher with no class that period may still be unavailable. They may be on duty, at their daily limit, or already covering something else. A naive gap search returns names the office cannot actually use.

    What I did

Availability is computed from the full set of constraints rather than the timetable alone, and candidates are ranked so the fairest option, usually whoever has covered least, appears first.

Results

  • Instant substitute suggestions ranked by fairness, plus timetable and task management.
